Welcome
When I was growing up, I was taught that to be successful in life, a person must have two characteristics; one is being lovable and the other is being capable. Later, I found out that having a lovable personality was actually made of two additional characteristics, the ability to love and the ability to be loved. This site is dedicated to helping parents and others to become lovable and capable “parents.” It is the intent then for those who are in care of children to help create A LOVABLE AND CAPABLE CHILD.
The Early Days
Early in my career I was involved with and conducted parenting classes for brand new parents. It was a program established by a local hospital to provide the essential and necessary beginning skills for those new parents. These classes also began, hopefully, to plant the seeds in those parents to think of the skills they wanted to develop in their child to better prepare them for their future. Therefore, at the beginning of those classes I would start with a question. I would ask, “When your child walks out the door for the last time as an adult, going into the world (figuratively speaking, for as I have found, they seem to find a way back), what skills do you want them to have to be successful? What do you hope you were able to teach them so that he or she can be a viable, productive and happy adult?” As parents responded, I would write down the terms they would use. Invariably, their words would be connected to the two key concepts I was taught growing up, being LOVABLE AND CAPABLE.
It is the purpose of this blog to explore the various ways to help nurture lovable and capable children. I hope that you will enjoy this site and join in the discussion.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you,
Coach Chad
